United Arab Emirates
Flaunting oil wealth
Modesty meets modernity, extravagance
I traveled to the UAE when my granddaughter was born. Like most visitors I was awed by the architectural grandeur of Dubai, but I was captivated by the romance and mystery of the desert, her camels and her people: men who interrupt their lives five times each day to pray, women who float with grace and dignity in their black silken veils and children who race about like children everywhere.
